Levine was an award-winning columnist, executive editor of the Times Herald-Record in Middletown, N.Y., and an inspired writer and editor who was dedicated to community journalism and watchdog reporting. He died in 2007 at the age of 54.

Christopher Mele, a former reporter and editor at the Times Herald-Record who is now an editor at The New York Times, spent years going through all of Levine's more than 2,000 columns and selected the best to be featured in this collection.

All proceeds will go to the Mike Levine Journalism Education Fund, a nonprofit organization that supports training journalists in the community and watchdog reporting that Levine promoted and held so dear.
